Figuring out magazine subscriptions in the iPad age [ArsTechnica]

While consumers seem to like the idea of carrying interactive
magazines around in one compact device (not unlike the appeal e-books
have), they have mostly balked at paying premium prices for each
individual issue. Time Inc. has reached a deal with Apple to allow
regular print subscribers access to issues for free, but the
compromise still leaves room for improvement.

5 Useful Facebook Trend and Search Services [Mashable]

Despite recent improvements, Facebook’s in-site search doesn’t
necessarily offer the best way to see such data. However, there are
various services that provide a dedicated way to either search
Facebook’s 500 million-strong data stream (at least what’s made
public), or see what’s “trending” on the site in a way that’s similar
to Twitter.

Email is too slow and wristwatches are pointless for college freshmen [CNN]

The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet [Wired]

Two decades after its birth, the World Wide Web is in decline, as
simpler, sleeker services — think apps — are less about the searching
and more about the getting. Chris Anderson explains how this new
paradigm reflects the inevitable course of capitalism. And Michael
Wolff explains why the new breed of media titan is forsaking the Web
for more promising (and profitable) pastures.

If It’s On The Internet, It Must Be True [TechCrunch]

This past week, formerly unknown actress Elyse Porterfield fooled
millions playing Jenny, the Dry Erase girl, who quit in a clever hoax.
Right now, I guarantee other pranksters are dreaming up new schemes to
fool you again. And journalists, who at one time were tasked with
protecting the public from such lies, no longer have the same power to
block them.

Why Location-Based Social Media Needs to Get “Passive” Aggressive [Mashable]

Stopping whatever you’re doing to check-in when you arrive at a
location is just lame. If you’re arriving at a happy hour, you might
lose a conversation while you’re busy tapping away. If you visit a
store, you’ll be standing just outside or inside and getting in the
way until you’ve checked-in. The active checkin requirement is one
thing holding back location-based social networks.

Facebook's Foursquare competitor is imminent [CNet]

The long-rumored geolocation "check-in" feature at Facebook is slated
to debut within weeks, multiple sources familiar with the matter told
CNET. It's going to take the form of an application programming
interface (API) for third-party companies on the Facebook developer
platform, integrating existing "check-in" start-ups more deeply into
the massive social-networking service and in turn permitting
location-aware data to become a part of existing platform
applications.

critics have argued that consumers will be turned off by the device's
"tweener" status.
