Is there a future for hyperlocal media? [memeburn]

Local is the new frontier. Local ads, deals, and services represent a
massive business opportunity for the Internet giants and media
companies. But local ads need local content and that local content
can’t be machine aggregated, it requires feet on the streets: selling
ads and collecting the news. And ‘Local’ is a tough nut to crack.

Hard economic lessons for news [BuzzMachine]

I’m working on a talk that I hope will become the canonical link to my
essential message about the business rules and realities of news. I
continue to be astonished at the economic naiveté I hear in
discussions of the business of news. Here is my answer, the basis of a
talk — to be delivered in tweets, in the model of John Paton — and a
lesson for my classes.

Filtering the Social Web to Present News Items [NYTimes]

News events as varied as the commercial jet landing in the Hudson
River and the uprisings in Egypt have demonstrated that people armed
with cellphones — not professional reporters — are often the first
source of breaking news, uploading Twitter posts, photos and video to
the Web. But the result can leave people drowning in too much
information. A Web start-up named Storify, which opens to the public
Monday, aims to help journalists and others collect and filter all
this information.

The Half-life of a News Feed Post? About 80 Minutes, Study Says [AdAge]

How long does it take for a Facebook post to get stale? About 1 hour
and 20 minutes, according to a new study released by social analytics
firm Visibli. So for all those brands spending money to get a mention
in the News Feed, it's a very quick ride. Part of the takeaway,
Visibli CEO Saif Ajani said, is that marketers and brands can get some
comfort knowing that posts on Facebook are fresh for a longer period
of time than posts on Twitter, because everything on that microblog
happens so quickly and in real-time. "On Twitter, 95% of re-tweets
happen in an hour," he said.

NYTimes’ R&D Lab builds tool that explores the life stories take in the social space [niemanlab]

Some of the most exciting work taking place in The New York Times
building is being done on the 28th floor, in the paper’s Research and
Development Lab. The group serves essentially as a skunkworks project
for a news institution that stands to benefit, financially and
otherwise, from creative thinking; as Michael Zimbalist, the Times’
vice president of R&D, puts it, the team is “investigating the ideas
at the edges of today and thinking about how they’re going to impact
business decisions tomorrow.” For the past several months, the R&D Lab
has been working, quietly, on a time-based representation of how the
Times’ news content is being shared in Twitter’s social space.

Why every company needs a 'Twitter Tsar' [Telegraph]

Last week the Government began its search for a digital chief, or more
precisely its ‘Executive Director of Digital’. The reason for my
pedantry over the title of this newly created role is that the job has
been jovially referred to across the media as a ‘Twitter Tsar’.
Eye-catching headlines aside, it’s important to properly understand
the Government’s need for a digital leader and also the immense value
a great one can bring an organization - which if selected correctly –
will more than justify the £142,000 advertised salary, despite it
being only £500 less than the Prime Minister’s wage.

The Winners & Losers of Social Networking INFOGRAPHIC [Mashable]

The course of social media never did run smooth — not for long,
anyhow. And for some Web 2.0 companies, it’s running less smoothly
than ever. It goes without saying that Facebook is the network du
jour, but even though the reigning champion’s user stats keep soaring,
social networking as a whole might be leveling off. Nevertheless,
there are still scores of other highly competitive social sites that
are waxing and waning; and different networks and apps are more
popular in specific geographic areas, with certain genders or age
groups and even among various social classes.

Why Social Media Reinvigorates the Market for Quality Journalism [Mashable]

Social media has created a human filter for quality content. The
social web, like the old water cooler, favors conversations around
news and even in-depth journalism that may not otherwise receive the
exposure it deserves. Recent analysis of the most-tweeted stories from
The Daily iPad app revealed that users shared more hard news stories
over gossip and opinion pieces. This doesn’t necessarily mean these
are the stories most people are reading. The gossip articles (or
“fluff” pieces) often out-perform news items in pageviews, often
because that is what people are searching for. But the tide may be
changing.

How Paywalls Are Changing News Organizations’ Social Media Strategies [Mashable]

The recent launch of The New York Times paywall has prompted debates
about the viability and fairness of paying for news online. Are
publications unrealistic about subscription prices? Should the
community rally to support journalism? Is it worth paying for? But the
biggest question that lingers in an everyday web reader’s mind is much
simpler: “Will clicking on this link bring me to a story?” Accessing
news articles from social media, blogs and other sites has become
increasingly common, making an unexpected paywall an unpleasant reader
experience. Maintaining the happiness of subscribers and
non-subscribers alike has fallen on the shoulders of community
managers at these paywalled sites.

Apple makes bid to become gatekeeper for newspapers and magazines [MercuryNews]

Apple's (AAPL) bold foray into the world of digital publishing could
make it the online gatekeeper for newspaper and magazine content, just
as it is for music. But for a plan ostensibly designed to help ailing
print publishers sign up new readers and thrive in the digital jungle,
the Cupertino giant's new subscription model has met with push-back
