7 out of 8 ad agencies: "social media spends either doubled or 'up significantly' in Jan YOY" [Clickz]

Seven out of eight ad agencies stated their clients' social media
spends either doubled or were "up significantly" in January when
compared to the same month in 2011. And brands this year have been -
not surprisingly - more dialed into Facebook than Twitter, according
to a survey orchestrated by ClickZ News. "I think social has become
fairly mainstream, and I think the education amongst our clients has
improved substantially," said Adam Donnelley, an EVP at MRM, one of
the agencies surveyed. "Facebook has managed to get more targeted and
build broader reach, and that's clearly something coming up in
conversations rather frequently."

Why Facebook Is Hiring Ad Agency Creatives: "Creatives like talking to creatives" [AdAge]

Facebook VP-Global Marketing Solutions Carolyn Everson has urged
advertisers to be careful about how they look at fan ROI, so as to not
repeat the mistakes the internet industry made in its early days. "The
notion that you could know who your best customers are, have a
one-to-one relationship and inspire them to become your best advocates
-- that's the totality of how we want you to think of this," she said.
"To think about fans as just a number or a click-through, you're
missing the entire piece about what's the value of a fan. It's not
about how many people necessarily commented, or clicked through.

[US] Local TV Goes Social [AdAge]

Local TV stations are using social media to extend their coverage and
conversations with viewers. They're also working to create more
integration with advertisers and device companies, according to
panelists at the Socializing Local TV session during the 4A's
Transformation Conference in L.A. "We've taken the tradition of that
emotional connection our viewers have with anchors and reporters and
gone into the space in which they live, which is Twitter, Facebook,
mobile and online, to have that connection," said Rebecca Campbell,
president of ABC Owned TV Stations.

Google's $150 handheld device could trigger tablet war [NYPost]

Forget $200 for a tablet. Tech watchers expect Google to roll out an
entry-level handheld device this year that could sell for as little as
$150. It’s not lost on Google that Amazon’s $199 Kindle Fire was the
only slate to grab a sizeable chunk of the market beyond Apple’s iPad
last year. With Apple winning the high-end tablet wars, Google and
Amazon are left to fight over the low end of the market.

Banks are "Social Media Wallflowers" [NYTimes]

While many consumer goods companies have embraced social media sites
like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as new avenues to reach customers,
financial institutions, and especially private banks, have been
reluctant. A survey on the social media activities of 50 leading
private banks found that most had developed “amateurish” social media
strategies, were “hibernating” on Facebook and displaying “tokenism
attitudes” to Twitter and YouTube, according to Assetinum.com, an
independent financial information portal for investors.

Rusbridger: Guardian paywall ‘has not been ruled out’ [Journalism.co.uk]

Alan Rusbridger, editor of the Guardian, has asked readers what they
were prepared to give back to the news group in return for journalism:
money, time or data. The first option, to ask readers to pay for an
online subscription, “has not been ruled out”, Rusbridger told a
session called “what might the Guardian’s future look like?” at the
Guardian Open Weekend.

Tablets: Just what the news industry ordered [TheNextWeb]

The emergence of tablet devices is perhaps shaking up the publishing
and news industries more than any other. Just as they were getting
used to this clear distinction between ‘online’ and ‘print’, there’s
now a third readership bracket that straddles the two rather nicely.
“When people are reading the Economist on their iPad, they’re reading
it for two hours,” says Economist CEO Andrew Rashbass. “And the way
they consume it is absolutely the way they consume the magazine. If
you remember when the iPad was launched, they didn’t talk about the
functionality of the iPad, or the specs, they just had pictures of
people leaning back. That was what Steve Jobs’ brilliance was.”

Report: The Future of Apps and Web [PewInternet]

The Web Is Dead? No. Experts expect apps and the Web to converge in
the cloud; but many worry that simplicity for users will come at a
price. Tech experts generally believe the mobile revolution, the
popularity of targeted apps, the monetization of online products and
services, and innovations in cloud computing will drive Web evolution.
Some survey respondents say while much may be gained, perhaps even
more may be lost if the “appification” of the Web comes to pass.

Report: Teens, Smartphones & Texting [PewInternet]

The volume of texting among teens has risen from 50 texts a day in
2009 to 60 texts for the median teen text user. In addition,
smartphones are gaining teenage users. Some 23% of all those ages
12-17 say they have a smartphone and ownership is highest among older
teens: 31% of those ages 14-17 have a smartphone, compared with just
8% of youth ages 12-13.

Report: Tablets helping improve news consumption [AP/Yahoo]

Mobile technology appears to be increasing the public appetite for
news but it's far from clear whether the news industry will profit
from that, a study issued Monday concluded. The Pew Research Center's
Project for Excellence in Journalism, in its annual state of the news
media report, found encouraging signs within the 27 percent of
Americans who say they get news on their smartphones or tablets. These
consumers are likely to seek out traditional news sites or
applications, strengthening their bond with old newspaper or
television news organizations.

Global ad spending seen stronger in 2012-2014 [Reuters]

Global advertising spending will tick up 4.8 percent this year to $489
billion with Latin America and Asia making up for weaker demand in
recession-hit Europe, according to leading media buyer
ZenithOptimedia. Citing lower risk of a deep economic crisis brought
on by Europe's sovereign debt woes, the forecasters slightly raised
their forecasts for 2012 from the 4.7 percent growth they predicted in
December.

Big 5 Outpace Ad Industry Two To One, Emphasis On Digital Cited [MediaPost]

The Big 5 agency holding companies -- WPP, Omnicom, Publicis,
Interpublic and Havas -- that represent most of Madison Avenue
outperformed the overall growth in ad spending, thanks in large part
to their increasing dependence on digital media. That’s the conclusion
of an analysis of 2011 earnings data, by Pivotal Research, which shows
the Big 5 growing 6.1% in U.S. ad revenues -- about twice the rate of
U.S. ad spending.

Why Twitter Bought Posterous: Talent And Apple [FastCompany]

Yesterday Twitter revealed it bought Posterous, a
lifeblogging/microblogging/sharing site. It's been widely regarded as
a "hacquisition" because Posterous' metier isn't totally compatible
with Twitter's own business model--at least as it stands, with its
hugely time-sensitive and text-centric user experience. So who are
these folks, and why did Twitter spend an undisclosed amount
(certainly many millions, given Posterous' successes and big-number VC
rounds) to buy them?

Steve Jobs' Ghost: Hi-Res iPad Will Undermine the Magazine Model [Forbes]

One of the design decisions that Steve Jobs made about iTunes—and for
better or worse, one that has been responsible for its tremendous
success—was to make the primary unit of sale the song as opposed to
the album. Jobs was a classic rock, album-oriented guy as much as any
boomer, but he saw what was going on in the world of illicit file
sharing and realized that the kids were trading in songs already. But
when it comes to the world of magazine publishing, that lesson has not
yet been learned. With the entry of the “New iPad” with it’s
high-resolution retina display, the traditional magazine model will
come under increased pressure.

spend staring at small screens, it's still the television screen that

"Welcome to BuzzFeed FWD. Tech, for humans." [BuzzFeed]

"Tech used to be a discrete thing in our lives — a newfangled video
game console or DVD player or bulky video camera hoisted on our dad’s
shoulder. A cordless phone. Maybe a single computer in the home office
if your family was lucky, a thin bleepy-bloopy-skkkkhhhh line to this
neat computer almanac thing called the 'Internet.' But technology is
no longer a discrete category, or some thing that occasionally and
clumsily intersects with culture. It's reshaping culture. Creating
culture. It is culture. It's wonderful. Mostly. We think? It's also
consistently absurd and hilarious"

Papers Put Faith in Paywalls [WSJ]

As more newspapers close the door on free access to their websites,
some publishers are still waiting for paying customers to pour in. The

Yet the results aren't discouraging industry executives, who say their
efforts are succeeding in shoring up the core print business after
years of declines.

Study Finds Newspapers Struggling to Find Digital Revenue; Executives say industry resistant to change [AdWeek]

According to a new study set for release today by Pew Research
Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, newspapers aren’t
having much luck in finding a new revenue model for the digital age.
The study’s findings, based on data from 38 anonymous newspapers and
interviews with multiple top executives, were fairly bleak: The
newspapers were losing seven dollars in print advertising for every
one gained in digital revenue. And digital ad revenue is still just a
fraction of print ad revenue—on average, print advertising accounted
for 92 percent of revenues at the papers surveyed.

As recently as two years ago, the idea of more than just a couple of
