Advertisers Go Beyond Blogging With Branded Magazines [Clickz]

Last month, The New York Observer ran an interesting article called,
"Journalists Take Refuge in the World of Branded Content." A year ago,
a good many readers wouldn't have fully understood what this title
meant. Branded content was pure digital marketing jargon, as
indecipherable to the masses as attrition rates or black hat SEO. Not
anymore.

minute people spend on mobile, which makes the mobile DAU numbers from

Watch Out CNN: New Twitter Search Capabilities Will Rule Breaking News [RWW]

Twitter Tuesday announced new search capabilities that give it the
upper hand as a breaking news destination over basically every other
news organization on the planet, from newspapers to cable networks to
websites and everything in between. When a new search begins to trend
on Twitter, Twitter's new API will send the query to Amazon's
Mechanical Turk service, where humans will categorize it to help make
it more relevant to readers. Then Twitter can populate its Discover
section with live, topical streams of news.

Why do community news sites, once hailed as the future of journalism, so often flop? [AdWeek]

Local businesses spend anywhere from $100 to $1,200 per month
advertising on community news sites, according to sources, but most
often lay out around $200. That’s not enough revenue to make them
viable. Gordon Borrell, CEO of the research firm Borrell Associates,
gives companies like Fisher props for experimenting in the space but
points to the fact that hyperlocal revenue remains tiny. “I sit on top
of a lot of information, from about 5,900 media companies, and it’s
very clear that these hyperlocal news sites don’t generate that much
money,” he says.

Why hyperlocal won’t save newspapers (and what will) [PerSquareMile]

Too many newspapers have placed their bets on intensely local
coverage, or hyperlocal as they call it in the biz. That’s a mistake.
To remain profitable, they need to concentrate on a particular topic
instead of a geographic region.

Twitter surpasses 200M active monthly users [CNet]

Twitter has not yet hit the saturation point. The booming social
network and venue for the "pulse of the planet" said today that it now
has more than 200 million active monthly users. Twitter had hit the
100 million mark in September 2011, and as of spring 2012 was boasting
of 140 million. It was at that latter point in time that Twitter
disclosed its not so modest ambition of eventually reaching 2 billion
users. Facebook, by contrast, currently claims on the order of 1
billion monthly active users.
